You're pressed for time already, and now one of your final drives has stopped your equipment in its tracks. You need a replacement, and you need it fast. In this Shop Talk Blog post, we are going to discuss 4 important questions you need to ask when you are about to replace your final drive or hydraulic motor. Taking the time to get answers to these questions will save you trouble (and possibly money) in the long run.
Is it a new, rebuilt, or reman final drive?
We've talked about new, rebuilt, and reman final drives several times on the Shop Talk Blog. For this question, however, we just want to emphasize the importance of being sure what kind of drive you are getting when it comes time to replace your final drive. Also, keep in mind that new final drives could include new aftermarket final drives that are a match for your equipment but may not be from the OEM. Some aftermarket manufacturers manufacture higher quality drives than others, so be sure that you know the manufacturer of your replacement drive.
Will the final drive fit your machine?
Some final drives are trickier to identify than others, such as Bobcat T140/T180/T190 final drive motors. With these types of motors, first you need to identify whether or not it is a four port motor, then determine if it is a 12 bolt or 6 bolt model. If it is a five port drive, then you need to determine if it is a short-nose or regular-nose model. There are also some key measurements you will need to track down before you place an order to be sure that the fitment is appropriate for your machine.
What kind of warranty is offered on the final drive?
What kind of warranty offered depends, of course, on the condition of the drive (new, reman, rebuild) and where you are purchasing it from. Always take the time to read the warranty information before your purchase a final drive and be aware of what limitations apply. If you have any questions about it, the sales team should not be reluctant to discuss it with you. Note that with new final drives you can expect to see a one or two-year warranty, and a one-year warranty for reman or rebuilt final drives if one is offered.
What is the turnaround time for receiving your drive?
If you order a replacement drive, verify how soon it will be shipped to you and when it should arrive. Some companies wills ship a replacement drive as long as the order is placed before 3 p.m. their time. Make sure they have your drive in stock before you place the order, or you may be in for an unexpected wait period.
If you are sending in a drive for reman or repair, you'll want an estimate of how soon they can get to work on it and approximately how long it will take to get it back to you. Experienced shops can usually provide very accurate turnaround time estimates.
