Terex Trivia

Terex Equipment Well Known

Terex is a well known brand of heavy and compact equipment that has been around for many years and, as with any company of such size and longevity, there are going to be some interesting facts in its background -- like a scandal involving SCUD missile launchers or the fifty different brands that Terex acquired through the years.  Here is some Terex trivia that might peak your interest in this Shop Talk Blog post.

Terex and Euclid

Euclid_TC-12.pngTerex can trace its history back to 1933 with the founding of the Euclid Company by the Armington brothers. Their main product was haul trucks, which became a strong area of interest for General Motors. GM purchased Euclid in 1953, but soon issues arose due anti-trust rulings and Euclid’s domination of the off-highway dump truck market. Euclid would turn out to be the foundation for Terex.

terex-co-logo.jpgThe Meaning of the Terex Name

In the 1970s, GM came up with a new name for their off-highway trucks and equipment not covered by the anti-trust ruling. That name was a combination of “terra,” Latin for earth, and “rex,” Latin for king: Terex. That also explains, in part, the Terex red crown-like logo.

Terex Faces a Scandal

In the early 1990s, Terex was falsely accused of supplying SCUD missile launchers to Iraq. This rumor was started when an American businessman named Richard Fuisz testified to Congress that he saw military vehicles being constructed at a Terex-owned facility in Scotland. This man claimed that the vehicles, made at the behest of the CIA and British intelligence, were going to be given to the Iraqi military.

A sixteen month long federal investigation resulted in no charges being filed.  Terex filed a libel complaint against Fuisz and the New York Times reporter who spread the story. The New Work Times recanted the story and admitted that Terex was innocent of the accusations.  Fortunately it seems that no lasting damage was done to Terex' reputation.

Terex Innovations

Among Terex’s innovations included the world’s first off-road hauler, the 1Z Trac-Truk, and the world’s largest truck, the Terex 33-19 Titan. Terex also developed the world's first twin-powered dozer, the Euclid TC-12/Terex 82-80 (nicknamed the Mean Green Bulldozing Machine).

Terex Acquisitions

Terex would become the owner of 50 different brands through careful acquisitions, many of which took place after Randolph W. Lenz purchased Terex from GM. Included in the acquisitions were Fermec, Demag Mobile Cranes, Koehring Cranes and Excavators, Clark Equipment Company, O&K Mining, Genie Industries, Fruehauf Trailer, and ASV.

Terex Product Line
