Final Drive, Manufacturers

Most people in this industry are familiar with prominent like Bobcat or John Deere, major manufacturers of earth moving and construction equipment that have a worldwide presence. However, not as many know about the manufacturers of the final drives that provide the torque for their equipment. In this Shop Talk Blog post, we will talk about five major manufacturers for final drives: Rexroth, Nachi, Eaton, Comer, and Bonfiglioli.

Rexroth

Bosch-Rexroth is a German company that specializes in the control and motion of both mobile and industrial equipment. Of these five manufacturers, Bosch-Rexroth is by far the oldest, with roots that go back to a water-driven iron forge in 1795. Through the years, they have manufactured all kinds of products, including cookware, butcher shop equipment, irons, hydraulics, electronic controls, and much more. Today, Rexroth remains one of the most popular manufacturers of final drive hydraulic motors internationally.

Nachi

Kohki Imura founded the Nachi-Fujikoshi Corp. back in 1928 in Toyama, Japan. The Nachi name comes with an interesting backstory. It begins with a visit from the Emperor in which he was touring factories in the same district that Nachi resided in. A hacksaw blade that had been manufactured by the company we now know as Nachi-Fujikoshi drew the attention of the Emperor. The founder of the company was so pleased that he decided to name his product line after the Emperor's cruiser: The Nachi.

Like most of the companies discussed in this article, Nachi manufactures much more than final drive wheel motors. Included in their massive product line are both electric and hydraulic equipment and components, along with gear tools, machine tools, robotics, and specialty steels.

Eaton

EATON-corporation-1920.jpgEaton is a power management company – electrical, mechanical and hydraulic – and an international manufacturer of hydraulic motors and final drives. Eaton was originally founded in New Jersey around 1900 as the Torbenson Gear & Axle Company. Their first entrance into hydraulics occurred in 1965 when their engineers developed a hydraulic-driven transmission. Five years later Eaton acquired Char-Lynn, known for the innovative Gerotor Motor.  This marked the beginning of Eaton's focus on the LSHT motors and their acquisition of hydraulics companies. In 2012, Eaton added hydraulic swing motors and track motors to their portfolio when they acquired Jeil Hydraulics.

Comer

Comer Industries is a major manufacturer of hydraulic motors and for many years specialized in planetary travel drives. Comer is an Italian company that was founded in the 1970s with an emphasis on the needs of agricultural equipment. It quickly quickly rose to the top as a leader in power transmissions for many types of applications, including agricultural, industrial, and off-highway equipment. In 2015, however, Comer transmitted its planetary track and wheel drive lines to Bonfiglioli.

Bonfiglioli

Bonfiglioli Riduttori was founded in 1956 by Clementino Bonfiglioli in Italy.  When he started the company, Bonfiglioli brought his years of experience in the design of gearboxes for motorcycles and agricultural equipment (an interesting combination, indeed). In the 1960s the company branched out into gearboxes for industrial applications. Bonfiglioli's acquisition of Transmital in the 1970s led to their extensive product line of final drive motors for earth-moving equipment. Their name is synonymous with high quality and efficiency, and now includes Comer's line of final drives.

Conclusion

There are many different final drive hydraulic motor manufacturers around the world, but five of the most famous ones are Rexroth, Eaton, Comer, Bonfiglioli, and Nachi.  While they may not be as well known as the equipment brands that use their final drives, their products are just as indispensable.
